About Atlanta
Introduction to Atlanta

They don’t call it “Hotlanta” for nothing! And it’s not just because of the warm southern climate. Atlanta has become “the” travel destination in the southern U.S. because of its ability to offer a host of unique activities for visitors, while still reflecting “Southern Charm.” Whether traveling for business or vacation, the city prides itself on always being a gracious host. And no matter where your hotel is located, there is something to see or do on your vacation just outside its doors.

Downtown Atlanta’s centerpiece is the lasting legacy of the 1996 Olympic Games – Centennial Park. The 21 acre park hosts concerts and family activities in addition to featuring its famous dancing fountains. It’s flanked on either side by the World Headquarters for CNN and the city’s newest attraction, the spectacular Georgia Aquarium. Coke aficionados may visit the Coca Cola Pavilion where you can sample all things Coke and a few soft drinks from elsewhere that you’ll be glad are not! Or if that doesn’t appeal to you, take in a concert at Phillips Arena or a Braves baseball game at Turner Field. If you want a really unique experience, visit what the locals refer to as the “Fabulous” Fox Theater.”

From the Civil War to Civil Rights, there are enough eclectic neighborhoods rich in history and charm to appeal to any visitor’s tastes. “Sweet Auburn” is home to the Martin Luther King Center while the Highland’s host the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library. Hankering for a tattoo or vintage clothes? Try the ever diverse Little Five Points. Grant and Inman Parks feature some of Atlanta’s oldest and most stately homes, while Buckhead lays claims to not only the most expensive, but also hottest night clubs and most exclusive shopping. The MARTA rail system offers a limited alternative to driving in the city’s legendary traffic, but it’s worth utilizing, especially when coming in from Hartsfield-Jackson Airport. Accommodations and restaurants are as abundant and varied as the city’s attractions themselves.

If you want to take a day to escape the city, just 30 minutes northeast of downtown is Stone Mountain Park. The name pretty much says it all, it’s the largest outcropping of granite in the world and offers a place to hike, bike, explore or even just sit, all while being watched over by four Civil War generals… or at least their images carved in the mountain’s side.

When to Visit Atlanta
Spring and autumn are the best times to visit weather-wise. Bear in mind that thousands of students arrive in late August and early September to attend the area's many colleges - which is good if you're looking to party but bad if you need a hotel room.
